In Genk Winterslag we (my brother Ton and I) are visiting C mine complex. The former coalmine is now a combination of restored and new buildings, housing a restaurant, a museum, a cinema, an art and design academy and a huge studio of a ceramist. I like the way the buildings are -partially- renovated; there’s some rough edges here and there, it’s vivid and alive. People look around, heading for coffee or take photo’s of their children in front of the shaft. Close by is the Vennestraat, where the market’s just breaking down. Here also there’s changed a lot; I remember a photo from 1993, taken from Aldi parking lot in the direction of the coalmine. The parking is still there but street and houses are newly built, the view is different.
