Heerlen Beersdal. I was in this neighborhood in 2006 with city architect van Mastrigt. Beersdal had just been released and was no longer protected by monumental care, which meant that people could renovate to their own taste. There were certain restrictions on what was allowed. Now I see that rows of new-build homes have been erected along the edge. I make a tour with my camera and I am addressed 5 times within 15 minutes; “why do you take photos?” It appears that there are more people with cameras walking around, it would be criminals, the residents warn each other by their neighborhood app. Is this progress or loss now? I tend to the latter, it is also not nice to always be treated with distrust. On my remark that most thieves are not lugging around the neighborhood in racing bike clothes, they shrug their shoulders.
